Assignment 2 - IT Governance

IT Governance Role in Enhancing Performance

The information technology is very important to advance the performance in any organizations. Further, the ICT as well as the IT governance play vital role in improving public services and also strengthen to the polices the company set. (Henderson and Venkatraman, 1999)

The author of this journal (Wraikat, 2010) studied the Jordan public sector and the E-government portal of the Jordanian government in order to enhance its performance. He adopted in his case study the quantitative method for answering the research questions he raised in his research. For the data collection however, he adopted the questionnaire type with questions collected from targeted population and samples. He used different statistical tools such as SPSS to analyze the collected data. The researcher conducted   surveys with 26 public organizations.

He put some hypotheses that the accountability, transparency, participation and the predictability have relationship with the IT government.

The significance of his study encourages the Jordanian public sector to take benefits from implementing the five pillars mentioned above toward increasing the performance.

“IT Governance is an expression used to explain the use of organizational processes to make decisions about how to get and deploy IT resources and competencies “ (Henderson and Venkatraman, 1993).

Asian Development Bank (1998) said that “the most important pillars of governance are the followings: accountability, transparency, predictability, Participation”, however, Mulgan R. (2000) said Accountability explain the relationship between two parties in which one party, the holder of accountability, has the authority to search for information about, to investigate and to inspect the behavior of another party, the giver of accountability, where as (Scott. C, 2000) defined the accountability as ”the concept which should be determined in context: who is accountable to whom and for what?”. Regarding the transparency,  the Asian Development Bank 1998 said that “Transparency is the deliberate attempt to make available all legally releasable information—whether positive or negative in nature—in a manner that is accurate, timely, balanced, and unequivocal, for the purpose of enhancing the reasoning ability of publics and holding organizations accountable for their actions, policies and practices.”. The last pillar which is predictability; the asian group (1998) defined it as Predictability can be obtained from laws and regulations that are obvious, known previously, and uniformly and effectively enforced. When there is no enough predictability, it will make difficulties for public officials to plan for the provision of services and is an excellent reason for nonperformance.

After the analysis performed on the conducted data; he found that there are strong relationship between the pillars and the performance of the e-government portal.

The role of the storage manager and the IT governance

I read an article written by TechTarget magazine under the topic "Information technology governance and the role of the storage manager" and they stated that the IT governance is so important because it focuses on the performance and risk management of information technology systems.

The author of this magazine stated the storage managers must develop and execute a good information technology governance program, and educate users as well. Then he found from interviewing an expert in this field that the storage managers play vital role in educating and business owners about the possible or practical in the storage environment when it comes to crafting policy.

Finally he found that putting together a source-mapping exercise will help to illustrate the gap that exists at every company between the IT understanding of information and the business understanding. However, they're going to fail again and again when it comes to IT governance, whether just for day-to-day business purposes or for these extreme events we face in e-discovery. (Todd Erickson, 2010)
